Vintage Kaypro II Portable CP/M Computer – Early Version – Original Shugart Drives – Keyboard Included

Up for sale is an original Kaypro II portable CP/M computer. This appears to be an early production version featuring the original Shugart SA455-2AA floppy disk drives, factory ASSY 81-149 motherboard, and 81-292 ROM. The machine appears to be complete, clean, and unmodified.

Testing Performed

  • Powers on normally.
  • Power indicator illuminates.
  • CRT produces a bright, sharp, and stable display.
  • Startup screen displays correctly and prompts to insert a system disk into Drive A.
  • Drive A spins/seeks when a boot disk is inserted.
  • Two original Kaypro CP/M Master disks were tested.
  • Drive continues attempting to read but does not successfully boot either disk.
  • Drive A activity LED does not illuminate during boot attempts.
  • Interior inspected and found to be exceptionally clean with no obvious corrosion, burned components, or evidence of previous repairs.
  • Ribbon cable connections were inspected and tested.
  • Original Shugart SA455-2AA floppy drives remain installed.

Keyboard

  • Original Kaypro keyboard is included.
  • Keyboard cable was missing during testing.
  • A replacement keyboard cable has been ordered.
  • Keyboard operation has not yet been tested.
  • This listing will be updated once the replacement cable arrives and keyboard testing is completed.

Known Issues

  • System does not currently boot from the supplied disks.
  • Drive A repeatedly attempts to read the boot disk but does not complete the boot process.
  • Drive A activity LED does not illuminate.
  • Keyboard has not yet been tested due to the missing cable (replacement cable ordered).

Overall, this is a very clean, original Kaypro II that appears to retain its original hardware including the Shugart floppy drives and early motherboard. It would make an excellent candidate for restoration, preservation, or addition to a vintage computer collection.
