The Breakthrough: In 1984, IBM successfully developed the world's first 1-megabit DRAM memory chip (internally codenamed "Eagle"). It was a monumental achievement that dramatically increased computing RAM without expanding the physical size of the silicon.
The Launch: On April 18, 1986, IBM announced that it had integrated this 1-megabit chip into its commercial products—specifically the IBM Model 3090 mainframe. This marked the first time a megabit chip was used in a commercially available computer.
The Propaganda Wars: During the mid-1980s, American tech giants like IBM were locked in a fierce hardware race against dominant Japanese semiconductor companies.
