THE "RED PACK" - A Rare Piece of DEC Field Service History (1979)
Up for sale is a genuine Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) RM03P Disk Pack (Model 9877).
This is not a standard "scratch pack" used for payroll data. As indicated by the official label—and the emphatic handwritten warning written inside the canister—this is a "RED PACK."
In the golden era of "Big Iron," Red Packs were typically reserved as Customer Engineering (CE) Alignment Packs or Diagnostic Masters. They were the precision tools carried by DEC Field Service Engineers to calibrate the massive RM03 drives on legendary systems like the PDP-11/70 and the VAX-11/780.
Provenance & Markings:
The "Nervous Engineer" Mark: The canister features "RED PACK" hand-written in marker. This was likely done by a Data Center Operator or DEC Engineer to ensure this critical tool was never accidentally formatted or overwritten.
Official Label: "Property of Digital Equipment Corporation" (Copyright 1979).
Format: RM03P (approx. 67MB capacity).
Condition:This item is being sold as a vintage collectible/display piece. Due to the lack of an RM03 drive (which weighs 500 lbs and requires 3-phase power), this pack is untested. Visually, it is a stunning example of late 70s industrial design. The amber/smoke plastic cover is intact, and the internal handle mechanism operates correctly.
Why Buy This?
For the Restorer: A potential alignment tool for your PDP or VAX restoration project.
For the Collector: A "Red Pack" is a conversation starter that stands out in any vintage computing collection.
Industrial Decor: This is a beautiful object. The heavy mechanical aesthetic makes it a perfect prop for a tech office, studio, or set design.
SHIPPING NOTE:I am an experienced seller and I understand the "fragility paradox" of these packs (heavy metal inside, brittle plastic outside). I will not throw this in a bubble mailer. It will be double-boxed with rigid padding to ensure the handle and bottom cover arrive intact.
