The Video Floppy, known as \"offereo furoppi\" in Japanese (ビデオ フロッピ), is a type of analog recording storage medium resembling a 2-inch magnetic floppy disk. Its primary function is to preserve still frames of composite analog video. Referred to as VF disks, these video floppies have the capacity to store up to 25 frames, adhering to either the NTSC or PAL video standards. Each frame comprises two fields of interlaced video. Additionally, the video floppy is capable of storing 50 frames of video, with each frame containing only one field of video information, which is recorded or played back in a \"skip-field\" manner.

Sony pioneered the concept of video floppies, showcasing them initially under the \"Mavipak\" branding in 1981 for their prototype Mavica still video camera. It\'s important to note that this is distinct from Sony\'s later line of Mavica digital cameras, introduced in the mid-1990s, which utilized standard 3.5-inch floppy disks to store JPEG images readable by computers. The video floppy\'s specifications were put forth by the Electronic Still Camera Conference in 1985 and later ratified as Standard CP-3901 (formerly CPZ-250) by the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) in September 1988. This format found adoption by other manufacturers such as Minolta, Panasonic, and Canon, who incorporated it into their still video cameras released in the mid-to-late 1980s. Notably, the Canon Xapshot from 1988 (also marketed as the Canon Ion in Europe and the Canon Q-PIC in Japan) utilized the video floppy format.
