About the Seagate ST-251

Windows 1 (first Windows released in year 1985 running on Tesla Referral SMEP PP06 (IBM PC XT Clone) with 640 KB RAM 2x360 KB 5,25" FDD, 42 MB MFM HDD (Seagate ST251) and Hercules Graphic Card.

Beginning in 1986, the IBM Personal Computer XT the 256?640 KB motherboard models were launched, which switched to half-height drives and 101-key keyboards (essentially the IBM Model M, but in a modified variant that used the XT's keyboard protocol and lacked LEDs). 3.5" floppy drives became available and 20 MB Seagate ST-225 & ST-251 hard disks in 5.25" half-height size replaced the full-height 10 MB drives.

Like the notoriousMiniscribe 3650, the ST-251 was slow and very noisy, but it tended to keep on going for a good while ? unlike some of its over-stressed RLL relatives, which were even worse than the Miniscribe drives.

There were several versions of this long-lived drive: the 28ms ST-251-1 was much faster than the standard model (ST-251-0 or plain ST-251), and then there was the ST-277R, which was a tweaked-up RLL variant. The 277R was, not to put too fine a point on things, a dud to be ranked alongside the notoriousKalok Octagonand the dreadfulSamsung SHD-125. Reliability problems with the ST-251 variants cast a pall over the entire company for some years afterwards, which was a shame as both the sluggish ST-251-0 and the surprisingly speedy ST-251-1 were solid, reliable performers.

The ST-251 made a unique hollow knocking noise on start-up, once heard never forgotten, by far the most distinctive sound of any drive yet made. Performance figures are for the ST-251-1.

With a 3600 RPM rotational speed, the Seagate Legacy ST251 hard disk gives you a high-end performance. The MFM recording technique, used in this Seagate hard disk, lets you record your data quickly and reliably. For faster data transfer, this Seagate hard drive offers a data transfer rate of 5 Mbit/sec. The 8 ms access time of the Seagate Legacy ST251 hard disk makes data reading faster. For reliable working, this Seagate hard disk offers an MTBF of 100,000 power-on hours. The compact size of this Seagate hard drive makes it extremely portable.
