Intel SDK-86 8086 System Design Kit Trainer Board TESTED WORKING w/ Sign on
Price: US $525.00
NOTES. This is an authentic piece of Intel's MCS-86 launch ecosystem; the trainer board Intel shipped to software developers and engineers when the 8086 was new.. I named this board "Phoenix" after bringing it back with the 8279 replacement. The laminated label is just my personal bench tracking label. Only ~2mm of adhesive at each end was peeled, so it will peel off clean.
TESTED TO MONITOR SIGN-ON; verified on the bench:. Powers up on +5 V only (~1.92 A at idle; -12 V is for serial I/O only, not needed for keypad/display). Boots to monitor version 1.1 sign-on ("- 86 1.1") every reset. Hex keypad fully functional: SYSTM RESET, EXAM REG, register stepping via "," key; see video. All four 2142 static RAMs (2 KB at 00000-007FF) read/write correctly. CPU is an authentic Intel D8086 (not second-source). Both 8255A parallel-I/O controllers present and socketed (the SDK-86 has no on-board 8259 interrupt controller or 8253/8254 timer; neither is part of this board's design)
UNTESTED (would need -12V and/or external connections):. Serial I/O; 8251 USART and RS-232 level-shifting, since -12V was not connected. The chip is present and passes resistance checks; I just haven't hooked up the terminal side.. Edge-connector / bus expansion; no bus-backplane or expansion cards to test with
REPAIR NOTE:The original 8279 keyboard/display controller at A31 had failed (blank display, no sign-on). A NOS AMD AM8279-5PC (date code 8209, (c) 1979) has been installed; spec-correct -5 grade, drop-in replacement. Board now boots reliably.
COSMETIC NOTES:. Clean; dust removed, no corrosion, no battery damage, no lifted pads. C14 (0.1 uF ceramic decoupling cap) has a cosmetic body crack but reads correct across the rail. Old amber flux residue remains on some IC legs (isopropyl wiped; not scrubbed to preserve chip markings). Silkscreen, soldermask, and gold edge connectors in good shape for a ~47-year-old board
WHAT YOU GET:. 1x Intel SDK-86 board, working to the level described above. No manuals, no box, no cables included (PDFs of the Intel Assembly Manual and User's Guide are available from vintage-computing archives)
SHIPPING:Board ships in an anti-static bag with foam support, in a sturdy box. All ICs remain socketed; safer than removing and risking bent pins on reinsertion.
