The Ubiquiti UF-SM-10G is a high-speed 10-Gigabit optical transceiver designed for long-distance network runs or high-performance switch-to-switch uplinks. It allows you to connect Ubiquiti switches, routers, or other SFP+ compatible network gear over single-mode fiber optic cabling up to 10 kilometers (over 6 miles).
How It Works & Practical Uses:
• Long-Range Connections: Unlike copper Ethernet (limited to 100 meters / 328 feet), this optical module is built for runs between separate buildings, across large campuses, or between telecom closets.
• High-Throughput Backhaul: Delivers full 10 Gbps speeds for fast network backbones and backbone links between core switches and servers.
• Note on Fiber Type: Requires Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) cabling with duplex LC connectors. It is not intended for standard multi-mode (orange or aqua) fiber patches.
