Card Details & Features

Introduced around 1984–1985, the Combo II was designed as an expansion board for the IBM PC and IBM PC XT architectures. Because early IBM PCs had a very limited number of ISA expansion slots, multifunction cards like this were incredibly popular because they packed up to five distinct hardware features onto a single card:

• Memory Expansion: The large matrix of microchips on the left side of the board provides additional RAM banks configured in 64K increments.

• I/O Ports: It provides a PC-compatible parallel printer port and dual serial ports.

• Clock/Calendar: It features an onboard real-time clock chip powered by an external battery connection to keep system time between reboots.

• "Cliffhanger" Bracket: The small metal expansion plate shown packaged at the top-left is what the documentation references as a "Cliffhanger" cable system. This allowed users to route the second serial port connection securely out the back of the PC case without wasting an extra physical slot opening.

• Software Bundle: The original factory card description notes it included utilities for "Wait-Less Printing" (a print spooler) and "Insta-Drive" (a RAM disk utility).
