This is a genuine Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor barebones system — a complete, ready-to-build desktop chassis with the motherboard, power supply, cooling and all internal hardware in place. The processor, memory and storage drive have been removed. Everything else that makes the machine a machine is still there, so you drop in a CPU, RAM and a drive and you have a working PC.

The OptiPlex 7050 SFF is built on the Intel Q270 chipset with an LGA1151 socket, supporting Intel 6th generation Skylake and 7th generation Kaby Lake desktop processors up to 65W. It takes four DDR4 DIMMs for up to 64GB of memory, boots from an M.2 2280 NVMe or SATA SSD, and has room for a 3.5" or 2.5" drive plus a low-profile PCIe graphics card. This board was pulled from a unit that ran an Intel Core i5-7500, so it is confirmed compatible with 7th gen Core i5 and i7 chips.

The processor, memory and storage drive have all been removed. You supply those three parts. Everything else — motherboard, power supply, heatsink, fan, cabling and chassis — is included. Which CPU should I buy for it? Any LGA1151 Intel 6th or 7th generation desktop processor rated 65W or lower. The Core i7-7700 is the top supported chip; the i5-7500 (the CPU originally in this unit) and i5-6500 are the best value options. Do not buy an 8th gen or newer CPU — they are not compatible with the Q270 chipset. Will it boot from an NVMe SSD? Yes. The onboard M.2 2280 slot supports PCIe NVMe drives and the BIOS supports booting from them. This is the recommended storage option and it does not require the drive caddy. Is the hard drive caddy included? Not guaranteed. Some units still have the caddy or bracket installed and some do not. Treat it as a bonus if yours has one. If you plan to use a 2.5" or 3.5" drive, budget for a caddy, or use the M.2 slot instead. Can I put a graphics card in it? Yes, as long as it is a low-profile / half-height card. The SFF chassis has no room for a full-height card, and the compact Dell power supply has no PCIe power connector, so stick to slot-powered cards. Does it include Windows? No operating system, license, key or install media is included. You will need to supply your own OS. Linux, Windows and hypervisors such as Proxmox all install without issue on this platform.
