What we tested
- Power-up: Drive powers on cleanly. LED illuminates.
- Spindle motor: Spins up to spec RPM (within 1 RPM of the 300 RPM standard).
- Controller board: Responds to host commands.
- Head assembly: Steps through all 40 tracks on the built-in diagnostic test, reports data for each track, completes the test without errors.
- Disk controller logic: Passes the read controller self-check.
The drive was tested using the standard 1541 built-in diagnostic test (the same one Commodore service technicians used). Test results are visible in the listing video. We did not run a long-duration burn-in or read/write verification across multiple disks; we recommend buyers do their own extended testing.
About this drive
This 1541 uses the ALPS mechanism — the early "toaster" style with the push-down door and spring-eject. ALPS mechs are the most common of the three 1541 mechanism types (ALPS, Newtronics-Mitsumi, Chinon) and are generally considered the most reliable, though all three are still serviceable with parts available from the vintage Commodore community.
Known cosmetic / mechanical notes
- No case, no LED bezel, no feet (see photos).
- Mechanism shows light wear consistent with a 40+ year old drive.
- No visible damage to the analog board, transformer, or controller board.
- No power cable, no serial cable (see "What you'll need" above).
