The plastic holder (containing a silicon PAD) clips firmly onto the base of the cartridge keeps air from drying out the cartridge sponge.These clips/holders are ideal for anyone wanting to: ---Top Fill their cartridges ---Keep cartridges in long term storage. You can glue in the pads like I do and this will reduce the possibilities of a slight bit of leakage. But due to the nature of the pad variances, these aren't necessarily leakproof. A best practice is to always rinse out the clips when "reacquiring the vacuum" (a natural process that will always leave a drop of ink on your pad)
