The First Hackintosh – Apple Rhapsody DR2:
$175

In the beginning Steve Jobs marketed the classic Macintosh with the new spectacular GUI of the Macintosh System 1 in 1984. This later evolved through many iterations into MacOS. In time Jobs left the company to establish his own hardware and software brand, Next Computer. The Next Cube (by the way the birth mother of the world wide web) and other hardware were powered by a new object oriented UNIX based operating system, NextStep. In the mid 1990s it turned into OpenStep and after the merger with Apple Computer the technology went into a new product, the Rhapsody OS.

This architecture was the base for the original Mac OS X and was also developed with the PC market in mind. The version (Developer Release 2) running on this computer is the last, almost finished product for the PC. But it was never released. As many interesting developments in hardware and software during the past decades it fell victim to marketing considerations. However here is the chance to try it out on period correct hardware.

The computer has an Intel Pentium MMX 166Mhz CPU, 64MB SD-RAM, 10GB HDD, S3 Trio 64 2MB PCI graphics card and an ESS 1868 ISA sound card. All hardware are recognized and configured for the operating system. While the sound card is tested and works fine in DOS I cannot figure out the correct settings for it to actually play sound under Rhapsody. The OS detects it but there might still be some IRQ and DMA configuration issues to root out.

I can provide the installation media and some support through my firsthand experience with the software.

My policy:

I have been collecting vintage PCs, parts and accessories as a hobby for 9 years.

The hardware I’m selling were all tested mostly at the day of the listing or not too much earlier. I take responsibility of their functionality for a reasonable testing period (one week following delivery). If there would be a problem I would either return the money or send a replacement part.

In most cases I have software and electronic documentation for the listed items which I would gladly share.

I provide combined shipping for sales ending in a few days interval.

The items are safely packaged in antistatic bag, bubble wrap and cardboard boxes taking into account the size and weight of the hardware and the destination country.

I also accept offers. If you think I overpriced something or just want to pay a bit less contact me!

I would gladly answer any questions regarding my listed hardware.
